Private Label vs. Ready Collection

For a new brand the practical route is usually in between: take an existing style and produce it with your label and your colour choice. Developing patterns from scratch is heavier on both time and quantity.

The Process

1. Reference and brief

The fastest way to explain what you want is an example: a product photo, a similar style code, or a physical sample. Add the target age group, target price range and your sales channel (retail, online, wholesale).

2. Style and fabric

A catalogue style is taken as the base, or the pattern is modified. Fabric is locked at this step — see our fabric guide for muslin, eyelet, poplin and denim.

3. Labels, colour card and packaging

Three things are brand-specific, and each carries its own minimum:

• Woven or printed label: neck label, brand name and logo
• Care label: wash instructions and composition, in the language of the target market
• Packaging: polybag, hangtag, carton print

Tell us your market's labelling requirements (language, composition declaration, origin) up front; a change later stops production.

4. Sampling and approval

Production does not start before the sample. Checklist before approving:

• Pattern and measurements
• Fabric colour, in hand rather than on screen
• Label placement and stitching
• Shrinkage after washing

Approve in writing. "Approved on the phone" is the most expensive sentence in this business.

5. Production and inspection

You can request an in-line check during production. Pre-shipment inspection covers quantity and size split, label accuracy, packaging and carton labels.

Quantity and Cost

Three items drive private label cost:

1. Fabric: more colours means a split batch and a higher unit cost.
2. Trims and labels: your own label carries a print minimum, often higher than the production run — the surplus carries into the next batch.
3. Patterns and sampling: a one-off cost when developing from scratch.
